Handling Gas Line Leaks
When you detect the odor of gas in your home, you need to act quickly. Gas smells like rotten eggs, and if you detect that smell, then gas is probably leaking somewhere. A leaking gas line is a potentially dangerous situation.
If you have a gas line leak from an appliance, such as a stove, there should be a valve on the gas line that you can close. If the leak is between the stove and the valve, you want to close the valve. Once you do that you should be able to hear that the slight hissing has stopped. Afterwards, call your local plumber to come and fix it correctly and safely for you.
Encountering a Gas Line Leak in the Basement
If you suspect that there is a gas leak in the basement, do not go down there to try and locate it. Instead, notify everyone in the house or building and tell them there is a gas line leak and that they need to get out quickly. Be sure to also remind them not to turn any switches or appliances on or off. This could cause a spark.
Things Not to Do When You Encounter a Gas Line Leak
Care needs to be taken when you come across a gas line leak that you do not do anything that will cause a spark, which could easily ignite the gas. Besides not turning on any switches, you also do not want to light a match, a cigarette, or a candle. If your garage is attached to the house, you do not want to turn on the garage door opener, or start your car.
You do want to open any windows and doors that you can. This will help to vent the gas outside and bring fresh air in. You still need to evacuate the house, though, just to be on the safe side.
Do Not Call a Plumber From Inside the House
Another thing that can cause a spark is a phone. Do not call while you are inside the house. Instead go outside, and get about 100 feet away from the house, just in case there is an explosion. Then, you can use your cellphone to call your local plumber; or, you can go to a neighbor’s house and ask them to call a plumber for you.
If you have a gas leak, contact your local plumber, who will be more than willing to fix it right for you. These professionals can ensure that your gas line leak problems are ended safely.
